How to Manually Prime a DEWALT Battery Backpack Sprayer

Applies to: DEWALT 20V Battery-Powered Backpack Sprayers (including DXSP190681 and similar models). When first using a new sprayer or after extended storage, the pump may need to be manually primed once before it will spray.

What causes this: If the sprayer pump is audibly running but no liquid is spraying out, the pump may need to be primed. This is normal for a brand-new unit or a unit returning from extended storage. The pump cylinder needs liquid in it to create suction. The procedure below uses a garden hose to push water into the pump inlet to bypass dry priming.

How to fix it:

1. WARNING: Always remove all chemicals from the sprayer and clean it thoroughly before performing maintenance. Always release pressure before disassembly.
2. First, check if priming is even needed. Fill the sprayer with about 1 gallon of plain water (no chemical), install the battery, and turn the sprayer ON. Aim the shut-off in a safe direction and squeeze the trigger.
3. If water sprays normally, priming is not needed. Turn the sprayer OFF, empty the water, and proceed to use the sprayer per the Instruction Manual.
4. If the pump is audibly running but no water sprays, continue with the priming procedure below.
5. Empty all liquid from the tank and rinse it free of any residual chemical.
6. Remove the red cylindrical filter from inside the tank. Rotate the filter about 1/8 turn counterclockwise, then pull straight up to remove it.
7. Point the shut-off in a safe direction. Turn the power switch to ON. If your sprayer has variable flow, set the dial to the highest setting.
8. Squeeze the trigger lever and lock it in place to keep the valve open. This lets fluid flow once the pump is primed.
9. Firmly press and hold the end of a garden hose (with no nozzle attached) directly against the pump inlet (where the red filter was). Leave little to no gap for water to escape around the sides.
10. Spray water from the hose directly into the pump inlet while the power is on and the pump is running. The backpack should start spraying within 10-20 seconds.
11. Once the backpack begins spraying, stop the hose flow.
12. Unlock and release the trigger lever first, then turn the power OFF.
13. Empty the tank if needed and reinstall the red filter.
14. The backpack sprayer is now primed and ready for use. Review the entire Instruction Manual before using with chemicals.
