Sprayer Tank is Leaking - Repair vs Replace

Applies to: All FGI sprayers with cracked, split, or leaking tanks (CRAFTSMAN, DEWALT, Smith, HDX, Lesco, Universal, Field King, and others)

What causes this: A leaking sprayer tank usually means the plastic has cracked, split, or developed a hairline fracture. Tanks can also leak at fittings (hose connection, pump base, fill cap). The fix depends on where the leak is. A leak from the tank wall itself cannot be patched safely. Leaks at fittings or seals can usually be fixed with replacement parts.

How to fix it:

1. Empty the tank completely and rinse out any chemical residue. Never inspect or repair a sprayer that still has chemical in it.
2. Identify where the leak is coming from. Pour clean water into the tank and look carefully at all surfaces, the pump base, the hose connection, the fill cap, and the bottom of the tank.
3. If the leak is at the hose connection, the hose nut may be loose or the O-ring is damaged. Tighten the hose nut firmly by hand. If it still leaks, replace the O-ring or the shut-off assembly.
4. If the leak is at the pump base where it screws into the tank, the pump gasket is likely damaged. Remove the pump, clean the gasket and sealing surfaces, and replace the gasket if it shows cracks or swelling.
5. If the leak is from a crack in the tank wall, do NOT attempt to patch or glue it. Plastic tank repairs fail under pressure and can spray chemical. The tank or sprayer must be replaced.
