How to Maintain Your Wildfire or SmokeChaser Firefighting Backpack Pump

Applies to: Wildfire Poly Tank Fire Pump (Model OT4-N) and SmokeChaser Chief Fire Backpack (Model 190790)

What causes this: Firefighting backpack pumps need routine maintenance after each use to keep the pump operating reliably when an emergency hits. Skipping cleaning can let debris or freeze damage disable the pump.

How to fix it:

1. After each use, pump clean water through the system to flush any dirt, debris, or fire retardant residue.
2. Apply a few drops of light oil or grease at the gland nut on the pump shaft to ease pump operation.
3. Inspect the nozzle for dirt that may affect the spray pattern. Clean or replace as needed.
4. Check the hose for cracks, swelling, or wear. Replace if damaged.
5. Tighten the hose clamps on both the pump and tank ends.
6. Rinse the tank with clean water. Check the cap vent valve and gasket. Replace worn parts.
7. For winter storage, add a small amount of automotive permanent anti-freeze to the tank and operate the pump several times so the anti-freeze coats internal components. Do not use anti-freeze with a leak-stop additive.
8. Store the pump and tank in a clean, dry location. Keep out of direct sunlight, excessive heat, or freezing temperatures.
